The cover shows a computer-generated model of Forssman synthase (green) superimposed on the x-ray crystal structure of ABO glycosyltransferase (orange). Donor and acceptor substrates are indicated, as is the manganese ion critical for enzyme activity. The authors describe how Forssman synthase, normally inactive in humans, can be activated to make Forssman glycosphingolipid by a polymorphism in the ABO-like GBGT1 gene.
