Data are means ± SEM for 4 to 5 mice per group. ANOVA in conjunction with Tukey post-hoc analysis was employed to analyze statistical differences among data from N, N+EPO, I, and I+EPO. Results of statistical comparison are indicated by lowercase letter superscripts assigned to each set of data. When 2 sets of data are labeled with superscripts of different lowercase letters, it indicates that the 2 sets of data are statistically different (P < .05). Similar results were obtained in 3 independent experiments.
EPO indicates erythropoietin; N, naive mice; N + EPO, naive mice treated with EPO; I, infected mice; I + EPO, infected mice treated with EPO; Hb, hemoglobin.
Spleens from naive and P chabaudi AS-infected A/J mice without treatment or treated with 0.1% BSA solution were used as controls. No significant differences between spleens from untreated mice or 0.1% BSA-treated mice were observed. Therefore, only data from untreated mice are reported here.
Naive or infected A/J mice were treated with 10 units of rmEPO per day for 3 consecutive days. Mice were humanely killed 1 day following the completion of the treatment, and spleen parameters were assessed.
Data were calculated by dividing the number of Hb-positive cells by the number of TER119+ cells and multiplying by 100%.
