HUVEC were incubated 4 hours with purified platelets (100 platelets per HUVEC), mononuclear leukocytes (2 mononuclear leukocytes per HUVEC), or platelets and mononuclear leukocytes (100 platelets and 2 mononuclear leukocytes per HUVEC). Note that because mononuclear preparations contained approximately 50 platelets per mononuclear leukocyte, the actual number of platelets per HUVEC was approximately 200 in incubations containing platelets and mononuclear leukocytes. E-selectin and ICAM-1 expression were measured in HUVEC by enzyme immunoassay. Control HUVEC were incubated with media only and equal 100%.
