Nucleated erythroid cells and megakaryocytes are not grouped in this classification. Analysis of the spleen cell populations indicated that the total numbers of these cells had increased in BCG-infected −/− mice, but their proportions were similar in both genotypes. Nucleated erythroid cells were estimated to comprise 5% to 10% of total cells and megakaryocytes ∼0.1%.
Background strain onto which the IFN-γ−/− mutation has been backcrossed.
Cells classed as more immature forms of the granulocytic lineage including myeloblasts, promyelocytes, and myelocytes.
Band forms are counted as having a doughnut-shaped nucleus with little nuclear segmentation.
Mature polymorphonuclear cells having a segmented nucleus. Eosinophils are counted in this category and comprised ∼5% of the total mature granulocyte population in both genotypes.
Monocytes and mature macropages classed together. Note that these numbers may be underrepresented in −/− mice due to the difficulty in separating spleen tissue.
