Clusters are defined as in Table 1. Data are the mean ± SE (n = 3) from 1 representative experiment. Gene expression levels were determined by reverse transcription followed by real-time quantitative PCR and were normalized with the housekeeping gene ribosomal protein S12. All in vivo values represent statistically significant induction (P < .05).

*

Fold induction of genes in peritoneal M2 compared with M1 cells during PLC-/-Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection.

Fold induction of genes in splenic M2 compared with M1 during Trypanosoma congolense infection.

Fold induction of genes in peritoneal M2 during Taenia crassiceps infection compared with peritoneal myeloid cells from noninfected animals.

§

Fold induction of genes in splenic M2 compared with M1 in the BW-Sp3 tumor model.

Fold induction of genes in thioglycollate-elicited peritoneal macrophages in the presence of IL-4 compared with the no treatment control (incubated in vitro in the absence of cytokines).

Fold induction of genes in thioglycollate-elicited peritoneal macrophages in the presence of IL-10 compared with the no treatment control (incubated in vitro in the absence of cytokines).

#

Fold induction of genes in resident peritoneal macrophages, incubated in vitro for 48 hours in the presence of IL-4 compared with the no treatment control (incubated in vitro in the absence of cytokines).

**

Fold induction of genes in resident peritoneal macrophages, incubated in vitro for 48 hours in the presence of IL-10 compared with the no treatment control (incubated in vitro in the absence of cytokines).

††

Membrane-associated markers.
